Black Home Ownership Rates

Black Home Ownership has been declining since 2004
  • As of 2024, the Black homeownership rate is around 44%, significantly lower than the national average of 65%.

  • The Black-white homeownership gap remains wide—about 30 percentage points—and is larger now than it was in 1968, when the Fair Housing Act was passed.

  • A 20-point increase in Black homeownership would generate hundreds of billions of dollars in household wealth. For example, the Urban Institute estimated that closing the Black-white homeownership gap could result in $352 billion in cumulative Black household wealth.
